Chea Hoon sent me this question:
I’m a mother of a 8mths baby boy. I used to drink the left over baby formula that my boy can’t finish. I am doing that because i don’t want to waste as the formula milk is quite expensive. I want to know whether it will do me good or bad taking baby formula milk? Please let me know the soonest. Thank you.
Dear Chea Hoon,
Thank you for your question.
It is not advisable for mothers to drink the left-over Infant Formula due to the following reasons:
- Infant Formulas are specially formulated for infants to support their rapid growth rate (both physical and mental) for their age. Therefore, the nutrient contents are not suitable for adults, for example fat and calcium.
- The fat content is very high (at least 40% of the energy is contributed by fat).
- The calcium content not sufficient for adults’ requirement (250ml of infant formula provides only 15% of calcium required by adults)
- Adult females are encouraged to drink Low Fat High Calcium milk, which usually provides them less than 1.5g of fat for every 100ml liquid milk that they take and easily provides 43 – 50% of calcium for their daily intake as per their daily requirement.
In short term, it will not harm your body but may be you will put on some weight due to the high fat content. The calcium content may not support your daily calcium requirement, provided you have your additional intake of milk or other dairy products.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to send in more questions.
Warm regards,
Bee Swan
