Chicken Pox during pregnancy

Hi, I’m Suet Lai and I currently pregnant for 19 weeks. MY ETD is 13 May 2008.

My worries is because i get chicken pox when i was about 3 months pregnant, which is 31 Oct 2007(1st day of chicken pox confirmed by doctor).

After that i went for my check up, ultra sound show normal. Doctor say is only the hearing and vision she can’t check through ultra sound.

Is there any effection to my baby? What should i do?

Await your prompt reply.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Suet Lai

Dear Suet Lai,

Chicken pox or varicella zoster is a viral infection .Having chicken pox during pregnancy may present small risk to the baby. The risks to the unborn baby depends on when mother catches the infection..If chicken pox is contracted in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, there is a small risk of congential varicella syndrome which may cause some birth defects. It is best you discuss your concerns with your doctor. Your doctor can perform a detaile ultrasound at about 20 weeks of pregnancy to ensure that baby is well.
