My baby is 5 weeks old now. I want to know when can I start to have sex again and will get pregnant again if I don’t practise any birth control. Please advise.
Thank you
Dear Madam Lai,
It is indeed lovely to know that despite just having a baby and being very busy, you are also thinking about your relationship. You can resume sexual activities when firstly, your stitches (if you have any) are healed, secondly, you have stopped bleeding and lastly, both you and your spouse are ready . This will usually be about 6 weeks after delivery. Of course, there are couples who like to wait a little longer or who are not yet ready to resume sexual activities at this stage. Some women are anxious and worry about pain while others maybe be tired coping with a newborn.
If you are planning to space out your family, it is necessary to use some form of contraception whenever you decide to resume sexual activities. Many women have been incorrectly advised that if they have yet to resume their periods or are breast feeding their babies, contraception is not necessary. It is wise to discuss with your spouse about the method that both of you are comfortable with before your visit to your doctor at a month after deliver so that you may further discuss the issue with your doctor.
