Keeping clutter to a minimum is common sense if nothing else. In feng shui, the argument against clutter is the same as in any other way of thinking. Cleanliness is also conducive to good Qi flow. Clutter makes it difficult for the child to think and see clearly. Encourage the child to give away and pass on things to others. Make this a regular, fun process. In feng shui, something has to go before something new can enter. Less is more! Open windows daily to let in fresh air and vibrant life force.

During the day, the light in the baby’s room should neither be too bright or too dark. Install blinds that can be lowered or raised as needed to keep the room at a pleasant level of lighting. If the room is too bright, the baby won’t rest deeply. If too dim, the room would be too “yin” and the baby could fail to thrive or have respiratory problems.

Make sure there are no hard corners from dressers or changing tables pointed at the baby’s head or body. Move these to another part of the room where they are not pointed in the direction of the bed. Look out the window too, and see if there are any pointing structures outside of your home directed towards your child’s bedroom. For poison arrows that are from the outside of your home, hang a Bagua above your child’s bedroom window outside the home for the best Shar Qi minimization.

Movement
A room that is too still is not beneficial for the growth of the child. To create good, but soft energy and movement, hang mobiles close to a window to move gently in the breeze and keep soft music playing in the room. You can also place a small fan on a dresser turned on low to keep air moving in the room. Avoid placing the baby under a ceiling fan as these disrupt their body energy.

It’s nice to personalize a room and carefully selected items can do this. Framed family pictures are ideal as they provide security and happiness. A green plant is essential as it cleans the atmosphere – but make sure it is out of reach of little hands! Lighting should be soft and keep electrical goods to a minimum to reduce the amount of electromagnetic radiation. Curtains are apparently better than blinds too, and often white is the preferred color, although this may lead to early mornings in the summer! Use all natural toys, cleaning products, bedding, furniture, and decorative accessories. Let your child enjoy the benefits of the Maitreya! The Laughing Buddha is a strong symbol of benevolence, happiness and joy. Decorate your baby or toddler’s bedroom with just one Buddha figurine to keep him or her smiling and content.

Honor your children. When they are old enough, let them pick out their own paint colors, artwork and decorative accessories. It is their personal sanctuary to rest, rejuvenate and dream.

Design motifs
Make sure that designs do not have harsh points, such as arrows, crosses, diamonds, or triangles. Nature designs are excellent and promote growth. Animal designs should also be chosen carefully. Ferocious or aggressive animals, even when they are made for a baby’s room, should not be chosen. Some of these are found in jungle motif designs and include lions, tigers, bears, and reptiles. Motifs with fish are fine as long as the watery theme is not overly dominant. Otherwise, respiratory, lung, nasal, or kidney problems could develop.

Primary colors are not ideal as they can be quite stimulating and, therefore, not restful in a sleeping place. Deep sleep in babies is necessary for healthy growth. Harmonious and light colors are great for baby’s rooms, for it will give them a sense of rest. Calming Yin colors such as blues and greens are also a good choice. Whites are excellent for children, but avoid black and white color scheme because there is too much contrast. Make combinations that are harmonious, such as green and blue, white and beige, or pink and yellow. For overall stimulation and creativity, the bedroom should have some representation of the primary elemental colors of Water, Tree, Fire, Earth and Metal.

Placement
The bed should not be against a window or be directly in line with the door. Put the baby on a solid wall with the head of the crib against it. Avoid placing the baby against a wall that is shared with a bathroom, toilet, storage, or utility-type room. Ideally, the crib or Moses Basket should be protected on two sides by walls. Shelves, cupboards and other storage structures above the baby’s crib or toddler’s bed is never a good idea. This may send off poison arrows towards your child, plus it is a safety hazard.

Bedding
Use solid or simple print sheets and bedding in soft colors of yellow, green or salmon. Avoid garish cartoon characters and action figures. They can cause your child to be moving around in bed all night. Use only 100% cotton bedding. When the child is old enough for a pillow, use only natural fiber pillows. NO polyester! Wash bedding in Dreft or detergents with no added fragrances. Do not use smelly fabric softeners or dryer sheets, as these are very irritating to the child’s skin. Change the sheets at least twice a week to keep chi fresh.

Babies and children are developing. The relevance of that to feng shui is that, children incorporate the influences into their growing process, taking it with them when they move. This helps to form their profile and can have a huge impact on their health, wealth and lifestyle in later years.

Location for the baby’s bedroom
A babies room should be in the middle of the house, to induce feelings of security in the child. A new baby should ideally have a bedroom that does not have an empty space below. The bedroom also shouldn’t be located where there is excessive noise that might keep your baby from sleeping.

Being pregnant changes not only you, but everything around you too! Getting everything you need for when the baby comes may take a lot of time and planning. Maybe you have that empty room in your house you’ve always known to some day be the baby room. And maybe there’s not even enough space for you and your partner in your apartment! Whatever your situation is, feng shui is something to consider.

Feng shui literally means wind and water. This ancient Chinese system for arrangement and placement proposes that by applying it in your home, energy will flow better in the room. Anyone living in or even just entering the room will prosper better than if the energy is the room was incorrect. As you can imagine, no one needs to thrive and prosper more than your baby!
