Heartburn is a burning feeling that goes from the lower throat to the bottom of the breastbone. It is caused by hormonal and physical changes in your body. Many women experience heartburn during pregnancy. It is harmless, but it can be very scary and painful.
Many women start getting heartburn in the second half of their pregnancy. For most women it’s a hazard until their baby is born.
Try this to minimise it:
- Avoid spicy dishes, chocolate, citrus fruits and, of course, alcohol and coffee.
- Eat small, frequent meals.
- Chew your food well.
- It’s important to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily during pregnancy, but don’t drink them during meals!
- Don’t lie down right after eating.
- Sleep with pillows keeping you in a seated position. Gravity will help keep your stomach acids where they should be.
You should check in with your doctor if none of these suggestions make you feel any better.
