Spina bifida is a defect of the spinal column that can result in handicaps ranging from subtle cases of scoliosis (a sideways bending of the spine) to paralysis and incontinence of bladder or bowels. Most babies, born with spina bifida, survive to adulthood with the proper medical treatment. But they may need crutches, leg braces or other devices to help them walk. Also, they may have learning disabilities. Some factors on the mother’s side may contribute to the development of neural tube defects: use of antiseizure medications, severe overweight, hot bath use or fever during early pregnancy and diabetes. A family history of neural tube defects or a prior affected pregnancy are also reasons to consult your doctor.
