What is false labor?

This is the term for a period of contractions that does not lead to the start of the baby being born. During false labor there will be no changes in the cervix, which would occur during birth labor.

This is the uterine wall, the lining of the uterus.

This is the term for the first 10 weeks of the pregnancy.

What is an embryo?

Term used to refer to the baby in the early stages of the pregnancy.

What are EDC and EDD?

Estimated Date of Confinement and Estimated Date of Delivery. They are the same as the due date.

What is a due date?

This is the expected date of delivery. The average pregnancy takes 280 days, counting from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). However, many pregnancies go beyond this time or end before this date.

What is dilation?

This is the enlarging of the cervix, the opening of the uterus, to about 10 centimeters.

What is the Corpus Luteum?

This is the exact area where the woman’s egg is released from the ovary at ovulation. Sometimes a cyst forms at this spot, but usually it will recede once the placenta is formed and complete, about 12 to 14 weeks into pregnancy.

What is a contraction?

A contraction is the rhythmic tightening of the uterus. It will usually cause the cervix to dilate, eventually enabling the baby to come out of the uterus. Contractions can happen throughout the pregnancy, but become stronger and closer together during labor.

What is the chorion?

The chorion is the outer layer of the bag of waters.
