What is quickening?

This is when you feel your baby move for the first time.

What is preterm labor?

This is labor that begins before week 37 of the pregnancy. It is usually noted with more than 5 contractions per hour.

What does postpartum mean?

This is the period after the birth of your baby. Your body recovers from pregnancy. Technically the postpartum phase lasts 6 weeks.

What is a placenta?

This is the organ within the uterus during pregnancy. It provides the nourishment for the baby. Towards the due date it weighs about 1/6 of the baby. It is disk shaped, is about 2.5 cm thick and 17.5 cm in diameter.

What is the perineum?

This is the area between the vagina and the anus.

What is ovulation exactly?

This is the release of an egg for fertilization.

What is the mucous plug?

This is a plug of mucous that fills the cervix to protect it against infections. The mucous plug may start leaking when the cervix starts to open slowly, before labor begins. Sometimes it comes out in one big chunk. It can be pink or tinged with blood and is also referred to as bloody show.

What does molding mean?

Molding is the change in the shape of the baby’s head as it passes through the birth canal, during delivery.

What is a molar pregnancy?

It signifies the abnormal growth of the cells of the placenta. A molar pregnancy is not viable and will end in a miscarriage.

What is meconium?

This is the dark green intestinal contents formed before birth and present in a newborn baby. It usually develops around week 23 of the pregnancy.
