What is Down Syndrome?

DNA defect which is caused by a chromosomal abnormality and, amongst others, resulting in mental retardation. The severity of the symptoms can vary greatly. Physical characteristic features include a short flattened skull, slanting eyes, a thickened tongue and broad hands and feet.

What is Demerol?

This is the brand name of a chemical substance, mepridine hyrochloride. It is a white and odorless substance that is soluble in water. It has a numbing effect, similar to morphine.

What is Dilation and Curettage?

It is also referred to as D&C. This is a medical procedure, surgery, to remove the contents of the uterus. This is usually done after a miscarriage, but also if parts of the placenta remain inside the uterus after birth.

What is a Cesarean section?

It is also known as a C-section, a Cesarean, a CS or a surgical birth. This is a medical procedure to deliver the baby from the uterus via an incision in the abdomen. Most emergency deliveries are cesarian sections.

What is cerclage?

It is a medical procedure during which the cervical opening is sewed closed; mostly used in cases of incompetent cervix.

What is cephalopelvic disproportion?

The baby’s head is larger than the mother’s pelvic opening is able to accommodate. Either the baby’s head is too large or the mother’s outlet is not opening sufficiently. This is often a reason for a cesarean section. Squatting has been said to sometimes improve the situation.

What is Bilirubin?

During the destruction of red blood cells this orange-red pigment can be formed from the hemoglobin. If the bilirubin accumulates in the blood and skin it can cause jaundice.

What is Bloody show?

This is a mucousy, brown, red or ping tinged discharge, which comes from the vagina. This is often an indication that the cervix is opening, but does not necesarilly signal labor. It is also referred to as the mucous plug.

What is a Blighted ovum?

This is a pregnancy during which the baby does not develop. These cases end in a miscarriage.

What is an APGAR test?

Quick test to evaluate the general condition of the newborn baby at birth. Skin color, heart rate, respiratory effort, muscle tone and reflex irritability are graded 2, 1 or 0. A score of 10 shows the baby is in excellent condition.
